What this test can show

  1. Prospect choices, not just titles

See how candidates judge which websites are worth contacting, a decision their resume may not reveal.

  2. Campaign judgment tied to a goal

Questions ask candidates to choose link campaign ideas that fit a goal and stay within search engine guidelines.

  3. Message improvement in context

Candidates work with outreach and follow-up messages, giving you evidence beyond a claim of writing experience.

  4. Reporting without paid tools

Plain-English scenarios use small numbers that candidates can work out on scratch paper, without naming paid tools.

Test integrity details

Each candidate receives a different set of questions from large question pools, in a different order, with answer options shuffled. The browser receives one question at a time, and answer keys stay on HireValid’s servers. Timing runs on the server; reloading brings back the same question with only the time left. Candidates cannot copy or select question text, and a blocked copy attempt is recorded in the timeline. The test does not allow back navigation. HireValid records signals such as time away from the test tab, pastes into answers, and answers faster than a question can be read. An Integrity Score and evidence timeline are provided for employer review; they do not decide on their own. With the candidate’s consent, an employer can add webcam photos at random moments. Read how we build our tests for more about the process.

Use the score as evidence

Review the score alongside a work sample and a structured interview, not on its own. For a work sample, ask the candidate to explain a sample prospect choice, campaign idea, outreach message, and reporting result. Compare their reasoning with the test evidence, then discuss any differences in a consistent interview. The pre-employment testing guide offers broader guidance, and Email Marketing is a related test to consider when that skill area matters too.

Pertanyaan wawancara terstruktur

  1. How would you decide whether a website is worth contacting for a link?

Listen for how the candidate connects the site to the goal and explains their prospect choice.

  2. Tell me about a link campaign idea you would adapt to fit a specific goal.

Listen for a clear link between the goal and the campaign idea, including attention to search engine guidelines.

  3. How would you revise an outreach message after receiving no reply?

Listen for a practical change to the message or follow-up and a reason for making it.

  4. What would you look at to decide whether an outreach campaign is working?

Listen for a reasoned interpretation of reporting numbers and what the candidate would do with that evidence.

Fairness and accommodations

Questions are short and written in plain US English without idioms, and they name no paid tools, so candidates who learned the work with different software are on equal footing. Scenarios use websites and businesses from many fields and regions, names from many backgrounds, and no money symbols. The numbers in reporting questions are small enough to work out on scratch paper, which every candidate may use.

You can give any candidate extra time as an accommodation. Results are evidence for a person to review, never an automatic decision.

Provisional: reliability is reported once 200 candidates have completed it.

Reporting numbers are small enough to work out on scratch paper, which every candidate may use.

Can candidates use scratch paper or go back in the SEO Outreach test?+

Yes, scratch paper is allowed. Candidates cannot go back to an earlier question, and the test presents one question at a time. There is also a practice set with 4 questions and a 3-minute limit, so candidates can get familiar with the multiple-choice format before starting the 16-question test.

Does the SEO Outreach test check that campaigns stay within search engine guidelines?+

Yes. Campaign questions ask candidates to pick ideas that fit a stated goal and also stay within search engine guidelines, so a tactic that might earn links but breaks those guidelines is not the best answer. Discuss the candidate's view of acceptable link building in the interview as well.
