Kısa yanıt

The CSS assessment is a 10-minute set of 15 multiple-choice questions on reading and writing CSS for real pages. It measures selectors and specificity, box-model sizing and layout, modern styling features, and core syntax. It is designed for front-end developers, CSS and UI developers, web designers who write code, and full-stack developers who build interfaces.

Ölçtüğü şey

Practical CSS knowledge: selectors and specificity, box model and layout, modern styling features, and core syntax.

Selectors, specificity and the cascade

Candidates inspect selectors and declarations to work out which rule wins in the cascade.

Layout

Questions ask candidates to reason about box-model sizing and how elements are placed.

Advanced styling

Candidates work out what custom properties, functions and container queries produce.

Syntax and fundamentals

Questions check core CSS syntax through short style sheets and HTML snippets.

Question formats

Multiple choice

The candidate: Reads a short situation, table or statement and picks the right answer, or every right answer.

You see: Whether the candidate knows the material well enough to apply it, not just recognize it.

15 questions in 10 minutes, served one at a time.

Roles this test fits

Front-end developers, CSS and UI developers, web designers who write code, and full-stack developers who build interfaces.

What this CSS assessment can show

  1. Evidence beyond a resume

See how candidates interpret CSS rules, sizing and placement in code, rather than relying only on a description of their experience.

  2. A focused skills check

Use one short assessment to cover specificity, layout, modern styling and syntax before deciding what to explore further.

  3. A shared starting point

Give candidates the same 15-question format, with scratch paper allowed and no calculator needed for sizes.

  4. Useful interview follow-up

Use the results to choose a relevant work sample and ask about the candidate's reasoning.

Assessment design and integrity signals

Each attempt draws a different question set from large pools. Questions and answer options appear in a different order, and candidates receive one question at a time. The 10-minute timer runs on the server, and candidates cannot go back to earlier questions. Reloading restores the same question with only the remaining time. Question text cannot be copied or selected. HireValid records signals such as time away from the test tab, pastes into answers and answers faster than a question can be read. An Integrity Score and evidence timeline are provided for employer review; neither decides on its own. Learn how HireValid builds tests.

Use the score as a starting point

Treat the score as evidence for a person to review, not a hiring decision. Use these steps:

  1. Review the results across selectors and specificity, layout, modern styling and syntax.
  2. Pair them with a CSS work sample that reflects the interface work in the role.
  3. Discuss the candidate's decisions in a structured interview, considering the score alongside the work sample. For help with that step, see our structured interviews guide.

Yapılandırılmış mülakat soruları

  1. How would you investigate a page where a style rule is not taking effect?

Listen for a practical way to inspect the relevant selectors, specificity and cascade, with reasoning explained.

  2. How would you approach sizing and placing a card within a page layout?

Listen for clear reasoning about the box model and the intended placement, rather than a memorized definition.

  3. Tell me how you would use a custom property or function in a styling task.

Listen for a concrete use and an explanation of what the CSS would produce.

  4. What would you check when a container query does not produce the expected result?

Listen for a step-by-step explanation tied to the code and the intended layout.

Fairness and accommodations

Questions use short, neutral code with plain class names and generic page parts such as cards, menus and forms, with no idioms, local knowledge or brand names. Answers come from current CSS standards rather than one browser's quirks, and a question about color is answered from the code, never from seeing a rendered color. Scratch paper is allowed for every candidate, and any sizes to work out use whole numbers that need no calculator.

You can give any candidate extra time as an accommodation. Results are evidence for a person to review, never an automatic decision.

Provisional: reliability is reported once 200 candidates have completed it.

You can also compare it with the [Angular test](/tests/programming-skills/angular) when hiring for interface development.

How should I interpret a CSS assessment score?+

Use the result as evidence for review, not as a verdict or a stand-alone hiring decision. Compare it with a CSS work sample and discuss the candidate's choices in a structured interview. For ideas on a considerate hiring process, read the [candidate-friendly hiring guide](/guides/candidate-friendly-hiring).
