The Design Thinking test is a 10-minute, 15-question, scenario-based assessment of how candidates learn from users, frame the real problem, generate and narrow ideas, and build and learn from quick prototypes. It is intended for intermediate product, service, and UX designers, product managers, customer experience and innovation roles, marketing strategists, and consultants.

Question formats

Multiple choice

The candidate: Reads a short situation, table or statement and picks the right answer, or every right answer.

You see: Whether the candidate knows the material well enough to apply it, not just recognize it.

15 questions in 10 minutes, served one at a time.

Roles this test fits

Product, service and UX designers, product managers, customer experience and innovation roles, marketing strategists, and consultants who shape new products, services or processes with their users.

A focused signal for creative hiring

  1. See scenario judgment

A resume can describe project experience; this test shows choices across user learning, problem framing, ideas, and prototypes.

  2. Keep the assessment short

The 10-minute test gives you a focused signal before you invest more interview time.

  3. Use evidence from realistic situations

Brief project scenarios, often with research notes or test results in a small table, ask candidates for a sensible next move.

  4. Compare relevant approaches

Use responses to guide follow-up on how a candidate moves from user evidence to a problem statement and prototype.

Test integrity signals for review

Each candidate receives a different question set, order, and shuffle of answer options. The browser shows one question at a time, and answer keys stay on HireValid’s servers. Timing runs on the server; reloading restores the same question with only the remaining time, and candidates cannot go back. Question text cannot be copied or selected, and blocked copy attempts are recorded. Personal invitation links expire, and a finished test cannot be taken again. HireValid records signals such as time away from the test tab, pastes into answers, and answers faster than a question can be read. An Integrity Score and evidence timeline give the employer information to review; neither decides on its own. See how we build our tests.

Use the score as one signal

Review the score alongside a job-relevant work sample and a structured interview. Ask candidates to explain choices from a project situation, then compare their reasoning with the test’s scenarios about user insights, problem framing, ideas, and quick prototypes. Do not use the score alone to decide. If the role also needs software skills, consider a separate Figma or Canva test. Browse the test library for other assessments.

Yapılandırılmış mülakat soruları

  1. Tell me about a project where user research changed how you understood the problem.

Listen for the user evidence they used and how it changed their framing.

  2. Describe a time you explored several possible ideas before choosing one to try.

Listen for how they opened up options, narrowed them, and explained their choice.

  3. Walk me through a prototype you used to learn about a product or service idea.

Listen for what they tested, what they learned, and how that informed a next step.

  4. Tell me about a project where test results did not match what you expected.

Listen for how they interpreted the results and adjusted their understanding or approach.

Fairness and accommodations

Scenarios come from many settings, such as clinics, transit, schools, small shops, public services and apps, so no single industry is favored. Users and team members have names from many backgrounds and vary in age, gender and ability, and no question depends on idiom, money, holidays or local knowledge. Questions are written in plain US English at the reading level of the roles, with design terms explained by the situation rather than tested as vocabulary, and no question requires knowing a particular named method or tool.

You can give any candidate extra time as an accommodation. Results are evidence for a person to review, never an automatic decision.

Provisional: reliability is reported once 200 candidates have completed it.

Test details

A short, scenario-based test of how a candidate approaches a problem by starting from the people who have it. Each question sets out a brief project situation, often with research notes or test results in a small table, and asks for the most sensible next move: learning from users, stating the real problem, opening up and narrowing down ideas, or building and learning from a quick prototype.

  • Questions are in English.
  • No aids are needed.
  • Each question is answered once, in order, with no going back.
  • 4 practice questions, 4 minutes, before the timed test.
