Jawaban singkat
The work motivation profile test uses 60 short statements to describe a candidate’s preferences across nine features of work and job benefits. Candidates rate how well each statement describes them, with no right or wrong answers. Employers can use the profile for any role, including customer service, operations and office support, alongside the job’s actual offer.
What it describes
A profile, not a grade: no trait end is better than the other.
Task variety
Lower: Prefers a steady set of familiar tasks done well, with little switching between kinds of work.
Higher: Is energized by a mix of different tasks that call on several skills in the same week.
Owning whole tasks
Lower: Is comfortable handling one part of a larger process that others start and finish.
Higher: Wants to take a piece of work from start to finish and see the finished result.
Work that helps others
Lower: Is motivated mainly by the work itself, without needing to see its effect on other people.
Higher: Is motivated by seeing how the work makes a real difference to customers, colleagues or the public.
Independence
Lower: Prefers clear instructions, set methods and a manager who decides how work is done.
Higher: Wants freedom to plan the work, choose methods and make decisions without close direction.
Regular feedback
Lower: Is comfortable working for long stretches without hearing how the work is going.
Higher: Wants frequent, clear information on how well the work is going, from the work or from people.
Stability and steady benefits
Lower: Is comfortable with less predictable hours, pay or tenure in exchange for other things.
Higher: Values predictable pay and hours, a steady benefits package and a stable, long-term position.
Results-based rewards
Lower: Prefers fixed pay that does not change with results, and recognition that is low-key.
Higher: Is motivated by pay, bonuses and recognition that rise with individual or team results.
Learning and advancement benefits
Lower: Is content to stay in a role they know well, with little need for training or promotion.
Higher: Values training, new skills and a visible path to more responsibility as part of the job offer.
Schedule and location flexibility
Lower: Prefers fixed hours and a set place of work, with a clear line between work time and the rest.
Higher: Values choosing when and where to work, such as flexible hours, shift swaps or remote days.

Roles this test fits
Any role at any level, especially where the work design, schedule or benefits are distinctive: customer service, operations, retail, warehouse and field roles, office support, sales and early-career hires.
See how the job offer fits candidate preferences
Compare preferences with the real role
The employer rates the same nine scales based on what the job actually offers. The report places those ratings beside the candidate’s preferences, including schedule, benefits and work design.
Discuss differences without grading the person
A preference for steady tasks or fixed hours is not better or worse than a preference for variety or flexibility. Use the profile to talk through the role rather than treat it as a measure of ability or character.
Bring concrete job conditions into view
The comparison can make details such as feedback frequency, results-based rewards and remote-day options easier to discuss before a hiring decision.
What you get for each candidate
A profile, not a grade: no end of a trait is better.
- Stayed on the test tab throughout
- No pasted answers
- Answered at a steady pace
Scores, profiles and integrity signals are evidence for you to review alongside an interview, never an automatic decision.
How the assessment handles test integrity
Each candidate receives a different set of questions from large pools, in a different order, with one question shown at a time. The 15-minute timer runs on the server, and reloading returns the same question with only the remaining time. Candidates cannot copy or select question text; a blocked copy attempt is recorded in the timeline. HireValid can record signals such as time away from the test tab, pastes into answers and unusually fast answers, then summarize them in an Integrity Score and evidence timeline for employer review. With candidate consent, an employer can add webcam photos at random moments. The statements have no right answers to look up, and very even or rushed answering patterns appear as signals. The Integrity Score does not decide on its own.

Use the profile as evidence for a conversation
A profile is not a grade. Review where the candidate’s preferences differ from the job’s actual conditions, then discuss those points rather than using a cutoff or making a decision from the score alone. Pair it with a work sample that reflects the role and a structured interview. For a Customer Support Agent, for example, a sample could reflect the role’s actual customer work. See the pre-employment testing guide for ways to use test results as part of a broader hiring process.

Understand scoring and benchmarks
Roles where the job offer is distinctive
The profile is designed for any role at any level, with particular relevance when the work design, schedule or benefits are distinctive. It may help frame a conversation for a Customer Support Agent, Office Administrator or General Hire. Match the job-side ratings to the conditions your opening actually provides.
A candidate-friendly preference conversation
The statements use plain words about everyday work. About a third are worded toward the other end of each scale, and benefit statements avoid money amounts, health matters, family status and assumptions tied to one country’s employment customs. Share the comparison as information for a conversation, not as a pass or fail. See our candidate-friendly hiring guide for more on communicating about assessments.
Fairness and accommodations
There are no right answers and neither end of any scale is better: a profile shows preferences, never ability or character. Statements use plain words about everyday work, about a third are worded toward the other end of each scale, and benefit statements avoid money amounts, currency, health matters, family status and anything that depends on one country's employment customs. The comparison with the job is shared as information for a conversation, never as a pass or fail.
You can give any candidate extra time as an accommodation. Results are evidence for a person to review, never an automatic decision.
Provisional: reliability is reported once 200 candidates have completed it. Results describe stated preferences, which can change with experience and circumstances.
Test details
Sixty short statements about what a candidate looks for in a job: the kind of work (variety, owning tasks, impact, independence, feedback) and the benefits and conditions that come with it (stability, results-based rewards, learning and advancement, flexibility). Candidates rate how well each statement describes them, with no right or wrong answers. The employer describes the job on the same nine scales, including the benefits it actually offers, and the report sets the candidate's preferences beside the job's so both sides can see where they match and where they differ.
- Questions are in English.
- No aids are needed.
- Each question is answered once, in order, with no going back.
- 4 practice questions, 2 minutes, before the timed test.
Pertanyaan yang sering diajukan
What does the Work Motivation Profile show?+
It describes stated preferences across nine features, from task variety, owning work and feedback to stability, results-based rewards and schedule flexibility. The employer rates the job on those same scales, including benefits it actually offers, and the report shows where the candidate’s preferences and the role align or differ.
Does the Work Motivation Profile have right answers?+
No. This is a profile, not a grade. Neither end of a scale is better, and the statements describe preferences rather than ability or character. Treat the comparison as information for a conversation about the role, not as a pass-or-fail result or a standalone hiring decision.
What should employers explain about the Work Motivation Profile’s job comparison?+
Describe the role accurately on all nine scales, including its actual schedule, benefits, feedback and work design. Benefit statements avoid money amounts and health or family matters. Discuss any differences with the candidate as practical details of the job, rather than implying that one set of preferences is more desirable.
How long is the Work Motivation Profile, and can candidates return to earlier answers?+
It has 60 statements and a 15-minute time limit. Candidates cannot go back to an earlier question. Before starting, they can try a practice set of four questions with a two-minute limit.
Do candidates need aids or a desktop computer for the Work Motivation Profile?+
No. No aids are allowed, and none are needed: each answer is a rating of how well a statement describes the candidate, with no right or wrong option. The profile does not require a desktop computer, so candidates can complete it on the device they have.
Which roles can use the Work Motivation Profile?+
It is intended for any role at any level. Its comparison may be especially useful when a job has distinctive work design, schedule or benefits, including customer service, operations, retail, warehouse and field roles, office support, sales and early-career hires. Rate the job based on the offer for that specific opening.
How should employers use Work Motivation Profile results over time?+
Use the profile as a description of preferences stated at the time of the assessment. Those preferences can change with experience and circumstances. Compare them with the job’s current conditions, then use a work sample and structured interview to explore relevant points before making a hiring decision.
