Roles this test fits

Roles built on working with people: customer service, sales, healthcare and hospitality support, team leads, and any role where staying calm and cooperating matter.

What the test shows that a resume does not

  1. Self-awareness

How a candidate describes noticing their own feelings at work, something a list of past jobs cannot show.

  2. Self-regulation

How a candidate describes staying steady under pressure, a starting point for a conversation about busy or tense moments.

  3. Empathy

How a candidate describes reading other people, which matters in customer service, sales, and healthcare and hospitality support.

  4. Social skills

How a candidate describes working with others, giving the interview specific areas to explore instead of general claims about teamwork.

How this test resists AI assistance

Each candidate gets a different set of statements drawn from large pools, and the order is shuffled. Statements are served one at a time from the server, and there is no going back to an earlier one. Timing runs on the server, so a reload returns the same statement with the time left.

Statement text cannot be copied, and a blocked copy is recorded. Each candidate uses a personal invitation link that expires. Signals such as time away from the tab, pastes and very fast answers are summarized in an Integrity Score with a timeline for the employer to review. The signals never decide anything on their own. Employers can also turn on webcam photos, taken only with the candidate's consent.

How to use the result with a work sample and interview

Use the result as a starting point for discussion, never as a ranking of who is a better person and never as a reason to turn someone down. It reflects how candidates describe themselves, so a lower score on one area does not mean someone lacks it. They may describe themselves modestly, come from a different workplace culture, or handle real situations better than they say on paper.

The useful question is which areas to ask about. Pick the one or two areas the result points to and explore them in a structured interview, asking for real examples from past work. For sales or customer roles, a short role play scored with criteria agreed in advance shows much of the same behavior in action. Keep the conversation on observable behavior at work, and combine it with a skills test or work sample for the role's core tasks.

Interview questions to pair with the test

  1. Tell me about a time you received feedback you did not agree with. What did you do?

Listen for asking questions and changing something, rather than only defending themselves.

  2. Describe a time a colleague or customer was upset. How did you notice, and what did you do?

Listen for reading the other person and adjusting how they communicated.

  3. Tell me about a busy, tense day at work. How did you keep your work on track?

Listen for staying focused on the problem rather than the person, and for a concrete routine.

  4. Tell me about a disagreement in a team you were part of. What was your role in resolving it?

Listen for staying neutral, encouraging people to talk directly and owning their part.

Who should use this emotional intelligence test?

Use this emotional intelligence test for roles built on working with people: customer service, sales, healthcare and hospitality support, team leads, and any role where staying calm and cooperating matter. It is an entry-level test of 30 statements in 8 minutes, so it adds little time to an assessment.

It fits naturally into the customer support agent, sales development rep and general hire roles, alongside tests of skills and reasoning. It is never the main evidence for a hire.

Its best use is to structure the interview. The result points you to the areas worth discussing, so the conversation about teamwork is grounded in specifics rather than general claims. For roles focused mainly on independent technical work, it adds little, and a skills test usually tells you more.

What an emotional intelligence assessment can and cannot tell you

This test asks candidates to say how well 30 short statements describe them at work, across four areas: self-awareness, self-regulation, empathy and social skills. Some statements are worded in the opposite direction, and there are no right or wrong answers. The score describes a workplace style from the candidate's own answers.

It cannot see inside someone's head, measure their character or tell you how they will behave under every kind of pressure. It is not a diagnosis, uses no clinical terms, and must never be used to infer mental health conditions or judge someone's character. Using an emotional intelligence assessment that way would be inaccurate and unfair to candidates.

Because it reflects how candidates describe themselves, it is open to people presenting themselves in a good light. That is one more reason it should never decide a hire on its own. Treated as one piece of evidence, it is useful: it gives you a consistent way to start a conversation about how candidates work with people, and specific areas to explore in the interview. Tell candidates what it is for, so nobody worries they are being judged on their personality.

Emotional intelligence in the workplace: what to listen for

Emotional intelligence in the workplace shows up in small, observable habits rather than a single trait. When you interview, listen for these.

Responding to feedback: does the candidate describe asking questions and changing something, or only defending themselves? Handling tension: do their examples show them staying focused on the problem rather than the person? Reading others: do they notice when a colleague or customer is struggling, and adjust how they communicate? Owning mistakes: can they describe one clearly and what they learned?

These habits matter in every role that involves other people. Watch for cultural assumptions too: directness and politeness look different across workplaces and countries, so judge what the candidate did and why, not whether their style matches yours. The test gives you a consistent way to raise these habits; the interview and references show whether they hold up in real work.

Using the emotional intelligence test for employees in a hiring process

Give candidates the purpose and format before they begin. The test takes 8 minutes and presents 30 short statements about handling feelings at work. Candidates rate how well each statement describes them, and the result shows how they describe their own workplace style in each area. A practice set has 4 questions and takes 2 minutes.

Use the profile as one conversation prompt, then explore examples from work and pair it with a sample of the role's core tasks. For a broader approach, see the candidate-friendly hiring guide and pre-employment testing guide.

Fairness and accommodations

There are no right answers: the score describes a workplace style from the candidate's own ratings, never a diagnosis or a judgement of character, and it reflects how candidates describe themselves. Statements are about everyday work in plain words, some worded in the opposite direction, with no clinical terms and nothing that depends on one culture's customs.

You can give any candidate extra time as an accommodation. Results are evidence for a person to review, never an automatic decision.

Provisional: reliability is reported once 200 candidates have completed it.

Pertanyaan yang sering diajukan

Is the HireValid emotional intelligence test a psychological evaluation?+

No. Candidates say how well 30 short statements about everyday work describe them. The score describes a workplace style across self-awareness, self-regulation, empathy and social skills. It is not a diagnosis, uses no clinical terms, and must not be used to infer mental health conditions or judge someone's character.

What is an EQ test for hiring?+

EQ is a common shorthand for emotional intelligence. An EQ test for hiring looks at how candidates describe handling feelings at work: their own, and other people's. The HireValid emotional intelligence test does this with 30 statements in 8 minutes. Used carefully, it helps structure interview conversations about teamwork. It should never be the main evidence for a hiring decision.

Are there right answers on the emotional intelligence test?+

No. Candidates say how well each statement describes them, and some statements are worded in the opposite direction. The score describes a workplace style from the candidate's own answers. It reflects how they describe themselves, not a measured ability, so read it as a starting point for the interview.

Should I turn down candidates with a low emotional intelligence score?+

No. A lower score is a prompt to discuss an area in the interview, not a reason to turn someone down. People describe themselves differently, and workplace norms vary between cultures. Give the test light weight, combine it with interview examples and references, and focus on observable behavior at work. The decision always stays with you.

Which roles benefit from an emotional intelligence assessment?+

Roles built on working with people: customer service, sales, healthcare and hospitality support, team leads, and any role where staying calm and cooperating matter. For roles focused mainly on independent technical work, it adds little, and a skills test usually tells you more.

Can candidates fake the emotional intelligence test?+

Candidates can present themselves in a good light, because the test reflects how they describe themselves. That is one reason it should never decide a hire on its own. Its value is in the interview that follows: ask candidates for real examples from past work, where rehearsed answers are much harder to sustain.
