Kısa yanıt

The Software Architect test is a timed set of design scenarios for software architects, solution architects, principal and staff engineers, technical leads, and senior developers moving into architecture roles. It measures tradeoff analysis, solution design, and architecture principles through decisions about stated requirements, quality attributes, and system structure.

Ölçtüğü şey

Weighing architectural tradeoffs, choosing designs that meet stated requirements, and applying core software architecture principles.

Tradeoff analysis

Candidates weigh design choices against a system's stated priorities and quality attributes.

Solution design

Candidates choose a system design that meets the requirements described in each scenario.

Architecture principles

Candidates apply core software architecture principles to the structure and constraints presented.

Question formats

Multiple choice

The candidate: Reads a short situation, table or statement and picks the right answer, or every right answer.

You see: Whether the candidate knows the material well enough to apply it, not just recognize it.

15 questions in 10 minutes, served one at a time.

Roles this test fits

Software architects, solution architects, principal and staff engineers, technical leads, and senior developers moving into architecture roles.

What this test adds to your hiring process

  1. See design judgment directly

Scenarios ask candidates to choose the decision an architect would defend, adding evidence beyond a resume or list of past projects.

  2. Focus on real constraints

Questions describe systems, requirements, and priorities, sometimes with a small table or short code or configuration excerpt.

  3. Keep screening brief

The 10-minute test has 15 multiple-choice questions, giving you a focused signal before a work sample or interview.

  4. Avoid vendor-specific familiarity

Scenarios use generic components such as a message queue, relational database, cache, or object store.

How the test supports an individual attempt

Each candidate gets a different set of questions from large question pools. Questions appear in a different order for each attempt, and answer options are shuffled. The browser receives one question at a time, and answer keys stay on HireValid’s servers. Timing runs on the server; reloading returns the same question with only the time left. Candidates cannot go back to earlier questions. Question text cannot be copied or selected, and a blocked copy attempt is recorded in the timeline. HireValid also records signals such as time away from the test tab, pastes into answers, and answers faster than a question can be read. It summarizes these in an Integrity Score with an evidence timeline for employer review. The score does not decide on its own. With candidate consent, employers can add webcam photos at random moments.

Use the score as one piece of evidence

Review the score alongside a work sample and a structured interview. Ask candidates to explain how they weighed stated requirements, quality attributes, and system structure; do not use the score alone to make a hiring decision. For related hiring screens, see Software Engineer, .NET, and Git.

Explore the decisions behind the answers

  1. A system has competing quality-attribute priorities. How would you compare the design options and explain your choice?

Listen for clear tradeoffs tied to the stated priorities, rather than a preferred design without reasoning.

  2. How would you shape a design to meet a set of requirements while accounting for its constraints?

Listen for a proposed structure connected to the requirements and an explanation of what the design prioritizes.

  3. When would you revisit an architectural decision as system needs change?

Listen for reasoning about changed requirements and the effects of a design choice, not a memorized principle.

Fairness and accommodations

Scenarios use generic components (a message queue, a relational database, a cache, an object store) rather than named commercial products, so no candidate is favored by experience with one vendor's tools. Every fact a question needs is stated in it, the English is plain and free of idiom, people in scenarios have names from many backgrounds, and code excerpts are short and use widely read languages.

You can give any candidate extra time as an accommodation. Results are evidence for a person to review, never an automatic decision.

Provisional: no norms exist yet, and reliability is reported once 200 candidates have completed it.

Test details

A short, timed set of design scenarios for experienced engineers. Each question describes a system, its constraints and its priorities, sometimes with a small table of requirements or a short code or configuration excerpt, and asks for the decision an architect would defend. The questions weigh judgment about quality attributes and structure rather than recall of any one vendor's products.

  • Questions are in English.
  • Aids allowed: Scratch paper.
  • Each question is answered once, in order, with no going back.
  • 4 practice questions, 3 minutes, before the timed test.

What does the Software Architect test measure?+

It measures how candidates weigh architectural tradeoffs, choose designs that meet stated requirements, and apply core software architecture principles. Questions describe system constraints and priorities, sometimes with a small requirements table or a short code or configuration excerpt.

Who should take the Software Architect test?+

It is designed for software architects, solution architects, principal and staff engineers, technical leads, and senior developers moving into architecture roles. The scenarios focus on design judgment and system structure, rather than recall of a vendor's products.

What is the format of the Software Architect test?+

The test has 15 multiple-choice questions and a 10-minute time limit. Candidates see design scenarios and choose a decision they could defend. They cannot go back to earlier questions. Scratch paper is allowed.

Can candidates try the Software Architect test before taking it?+

Yes. The practice set has 4 questions and takes 3 minutes. It gives candidates a chance to see the question format before the timed test, which measures tradeoff analysis, solution design, and architecture principles.
